Augustus Walter is a cancer patient who has osteosarcoma cancer. The first time he meets Hazel Grace is at support group at the "literal heart of Jesus Christ." After the first support group meeting, Hazel Grace is invited over to Augustus house to watch a movie and just to hang out. Later on that night, when Augustus drops Hazel off, the two exchange phone numbers and promised to call each other after they are done reading the books that each of them picked out for them. Few weeks later, Hazel and Augustus had finished the book but August (just like Hazel) can't stand not know to one of the books named "An Imperial Affliction." Despite Hazel recent attempts to contact the author of the book Augustus does. After several emails to the author to and fro, the author, Peter Van Houten, agrees that he would tell them the ending if he ever meet them in person. Now, Peter Van Houten lives in Amsterdam which is pretty expensive to get there from here, the united states. Augustus, being the nice person he is, decides to use his wish on going to Amsterdam with Hazel. When arriving at Amsterdam, Hazel and Augustus go on their first date at the "Oranjee" cafe. The meal is kindly paid for by Peter Van Houten. The next day is when Hazel and Augustus meet Peter for the first time. Now, instead of the nice, smart, brilliant author they were going to meet, they meet a fat, old, alcoholic scumbag who was just nothing but rude to them. After this, horrible experience, Peters assistant, who just recently quit, decides to take the two teenagers to the Anne Frank house. This is where they had their first kiss and the first "Special Night." The next day, which is their last day in Amsterdam, Augustus tells Hazel his cancer is back. Now August had cancer before but was treated by the removal of his right leg. This made him NEC for a long time but it came back worse then ever. Instead of it being in one particular area, it had spread through out his whole body. He went to go get a pet scan the day Hazel Grace was rushed to the hospital for lung failure. He had lit up like a Christmas tree. When they had arrived home, August was put on this new trial medicine as Hazel would call it a "cocktail" because it was three diffrent medicines combined. However, this does not help Augustus at all as he just gets weaker, and tired more often and throwing up more and even pissing the bed. One night, Augustus had invited his closet friend to the "Literal heart of Jesus Christ" to have a pre-funeral. He had always wanted to see what his funeral would be like. Two weeks after the pre-funeral Augustus Walter had died. He was unconscious for a couple hours before he past. Now, it up to Hazel to find the four letters Augustus had left her.
